history
Under the government radar, a project called the New Human Species Project was kept in the underground floors of a highly secured facility. The project was aimed to help humans continue evolving, since they had not been doing so for some time. Aoki, a top-level graduate in science and biology, was brought onto the project to help assist with the new genetics being able to take on a proper human form. Kamuro was the first fruits of Aoki's labours. But, when it was discovered that Kamuro still had defects, he was thrown into the garbage. Two years later, Aoki perfected the formula and Kei was created, dubbed as the first successful experiment; they called him Cristo.
Kei was taught many things every day to develop his intelligence and skill, as well as subjected to many experiments. One such experiment in particular defined his future - he was stuck in a room filled with criminals on death row. The lead scientist told these criminals that if any of them could kill the child, Kei, then they would be absolved from their sentence. The criminals all jumped on this offer and attacked Kei, but Kei swiftly and easily defended himself, killing them all. Aoki watched in horror as this all unfolded. That night, he erased all of the data on "Cristo" and stole Kei away, effectively getting himself removed from the project. Aoki takes it upon himself to be Kei's personal doctor.
The experiments that came before Kei were not supposed to be able to survive on their own. The defects became stronger, however, and they grew and multiplied on their own. These defects became known as Adys. Adys are massive monsters that can only be destroyed by hitting their hidden Nucleus, which varies in size and location for each Adys. After the shell of the Adys dissolves, the gelatinous Nucleus is left behind. This Nucleus is impossible to destroy, with the exception being if it is a clone of another Nucleus. The Nucleus has become a power source for the city in more recent years; and the stronger the Adys, the better the Nucleus, which will boost the price it fetches from the Guild. Additionally, the larger an Adys is, the weaker it is, although there have been a few exceptions. Adys can also devour humans in order to take on more humanistic forms themselves that allow them to blend in. Because the Adys are violent, a group called Sweepers were created to wipe them out.
Kei joined the Sweepers, having no recollection of his time in the laboratory, and achieved the SS rank at just the age of thirteen. His skills at eliminating Adys was considered so advanced that he became known as the Orange-Eyed Messiah. However, the failed experiment before him, Kamuro, also became an SS rank Sweeper to seek out Kei and obtain immeasurable strength. When Kei one day sees Kamuro devouring a human, a battle breaks out between them. Kei tries to desperately find Kamuro's Nucleus, but has no such luck. The battle left them both near-dead with severe injuries, and Kamuro steals Kei's left eye, while Kei struggles to get back to Aoki. They both survive, and Kei believes he was saved because of Aoki's surgical skills.
Kei retires his Sweeper title and goes into hiding, wearing an eye patch to cover his remaining orange eye, so that no one discovers that he is Cristo. He changes his career to being a janitor for the No Trespassing Zone, where Adys tend to reside. He follows this path for the next four years. Kei has no intention of ever being a Sweeper again.
Towa, a freshly graduated Sweeper, heads straight into the No Trespassing Zone to take out his first Adys. However, he ends up running away and screaming about how different the Adys is from the simulations. Kei dives right in, using his push broom to slam the Adys away and stab its Nucleus. After he takes care of it, he mistakes Towa for the support system inspector, asking him to have a Sweeper with him next time for his safety. Towa quickly clarifies that he is a Sweeper and demands to know why Kei is there. Kei says that he's a janitor for the area, and since he used to be a Sweeper in the past, he's able to defend himself quite well during his cleanups. He then hands the Nucleus over to Towa to allow him to cash it into the Guild and excuses himself. However, Towa is thoroughly impressed by Kei's strength and insists on becoming Kei's disciple. Kei does repeatedly tell him no, but he eventually gives in to only giving Towa a single day of training.
Kei invites Towa into his home and blissfully starts making coffee for them both. Towa asks why Kei stopped being a Sweeper, causing Kei to pause. However, Kei only responds with his own question - why did Towa decide to become one? Towa talks about Cristo, being inspired by his skills; he wants to search for him as he doesn't believe he's truly dead. Kei tells Towa that Cristo is definitely dead, as he witnessed Cristo's final moments. He tells Towa to stop searching. And then he cuts the conversation short by getting dressed and taking Towa out to the No Trespassing Zone to train him.
Kei explains the in-depth fundamentals of Adys to Towa, then directs him to kill a rather large, nearby Adys. However, before Towa can even put up much of a fight, Kamuro takes out the Adys and greets Kei. Kei is noticeably bitter about Kamuro showing up, saying he supposes he didn't successfully kill him after all. Towa notes the orange eye and calls Kamuro by Cristo, which none of them deny. Kamuro attacks and Kei fights back using a sword. When Kamuro slams Kei back, he tells Kei to take it seriously, or he really will kill him. Kei only smiles and says that he is being serious, but he's out of practice. Kamuro calls Kei weak for saying such a thing and makes an attack to kill Kei. However, Towa shoots Kamuro through the heart in the back, and Kamuro collapses. Towa starts panicking because killing another Sweeper is an offense punishable by death. Kei just tries to calm him down, saying he didn't kill Kamuro, and that's because Kamuro is an Adys.
Kamuro then attacks Towa, strangling him, which makes Kei act and slice off Kamuro's arm, and loses his eye patch in the process. He redirects the battle to himself, asking that isn't it himself that Kamuro wishes to kill so badly. Towa sees Kei's orange eye and starts to add the pieces up. Kei runs Towa through and Kamuro laughs, saying that Kei never was able to find his Nucleus. But Kei points out that he was observing Kamuro, and that the Nucleus must be in his head since that is where Kamuro defends all the time. With that bit of information, Towa jumps up and shoots Kamuro in the head. As Kamuro withers away, he tells Kei that he is satisfied, as that strength was what he always wanted, yet could never obtain, even by eating Kei's eye. He then says they will meet again and calls Kei the Orange-Eyed Messiah. Kei retorts that he is no longer Cristo; he's just a janitor. He takes Kamuro's Nucleus, and crushes it. Kei then admits to Towa that he is Cristo, but he never liked the title. He had no intention of coming out of retirement, and that was why he told Towa that Cristo was dead. However, he says he will come out of retirement as he still has a lot to teach Towa, having grown fond of him and accepting him as his disciple.
Kei dreams that night of being in a surgery room that is so bright, he can barely see. A figure looms over him in the bright lights - a memory from his time in the lab that he can't clearly recall. As he wakes up, he calls it a weird dream, but it isn't long before he jolts up, saying he needs to go somewhere that day. To his surprise, he finds a sleeping Towa beside him, and lets out a yell as he attacks Towa, not realising it is him at first. As Towa freaks out, Kei gets his bearings back and tells Towa that accepting him as his disciple didn't mean that Towa could just move in. Towa whines, asking if he is in Kei's way, effectively twisting Kei's arm as he tries to explain that it isn't what he meant. Towa accepts that to mean that Kei has agreed to let him stay. Kei brushes this off with surprising grace and just asks Towa to change into a suit, as they have business in the Upper Class Area this time.
Kei leads Towa to visit Aoki and lets himself and Towa in, despite that there is a closed sign in front of the clinic. Aoki lives like a slob, and Kei and Towa have to step around masses of trash bags. But when Aoki sees Kei, he dives in for a hug and relentlessly begins to flirt with Kei. And when he learns that Towa lives with Kei, he seems to be offended. And Towa is surprised that Kei can be friends with someone like Aoki. Shortly after the greetings, Kei hands Aoki a portion of Kamuro's Nucleus. Aoki says that, because it was able to be broken, that Kamuro was only a clone of the original. Kei says that he intends to go back to being a Sweeper so that he can kill Kamuro, as Kamuro probably can't be taken out by any regular Sweeper. Aoki and Towa both say that they will fight beside him for this cause. They head to the elevator so that they can go back down to the No Trespassing Zone.
The elevator explodes as it reaches their level, and Kei knocks Towa to the ground, covering him with his body to protect him. The real Kamuro emerges, along with several Adys, saying he has come to kill Kei. While Towa and Aoki take care of the other Adys, Kei and Kamuro face off. Kei vows aloud eliminate Kamuro on his title as a Sweeper. Kei laughs in response and tells Kei that he is an Adys, too - Code: K=18 Cristo. He says if he wants to know more, then he should ask Aoki, before slamming Kei into a wall and escaping, leaving another copy in his wake. Aoki tries to grab Kei and get out of there, but Kei stops him, asking Aoki to tell him what exactly he is. It isn't until after all three of them return to Aoki's place that Aoki sits them down and tells them the story about Kei's creation, and confirms that Kei is, indeed, an Adys in that respect. Kei becomes upset and demands to know why Aoki saved him, then. Aoki says it was to keep his identity from himself, to not become a mere weapon. Kei yells, saying that Aoki should have killed him, hating that Aoki was originally afraid of him, because he was trash anyway. And he starts breaking down, saying that if he had known he would have become a monster, he would have been so much happier if Aoki had killed him instead. Aoki tries to console him, but Kei punches Aoki and runs off.
Towa chases after him and catches him, trying to tell Kei that it doesn't matter to him what or who he is, he still values Kei has his friend. But Kei explodes, saying he isn't okay with it; that Towa has no idea how it feels and the fact that he's trying to be accepting is so annoying. But as soon as it leaves his lips, Kei regrets saying it and runs away before he or Towa can say anything else.
Back in the No Trespassing Zone, Kei finds Kamuro. Kamuro laughs halfheartedly, asking if Kei found him to find his death. Kei just gives half a chuckle back and tells Kamuro that he can if he actually wants to. Kamuro is taken aback by this, and tells Kei to follow him. Kamuro leads him to the remains of the laboratory where they were born. He tells Kei that the reason he was always chasing him down was to surpass him, and then devour him to keep himself from dying, and that he's so disappointed in how weak Kei has become. He had always hated Kei for being able to live so happily without any degradation and wanted to take that from him. Kamuro says that if Kei can't accept that he is an Adys, then he should choose death and become a part of Kamuro. Kei says he doesn't mind this and waits for the end.
But before Kamuro can kill Kei, Aoki throws a blade between them, with Towa following behind. Kamuro becomes furious at Aoki's arrival and stabs Aoki in the stomach, screaming about how much he hates his creator. Aoki understands this, and doesn't blame him. But, between gasps of breath, Aoki tells both Kei and Kamuro that they always felt like his children to him. With that, he collapses, and Kei runs to his side. As Kei holds onto Aoki, Towa shields him from Kamuro. Kamuro demands to know why Towa insists on protecting a monster while attacking him, but Towa continues to insist that Kei is his friend, and he will always help him. Kei is moved by this and comes back to his senses, rising back up to fight Kamuro. He says he may not be able to ever accept that he is an Adys, but that doesn't make all of his experiences as a human invalid, and that he still wants to defend those he can call friends and family.
But then Kamuro screams as his form begins to warp, becoming monstrous. He says he's out of time and falling apart. He cries out to Kei, saying that it hurts so much, begging him to die so that he can consume him and not die himself. But Kei declines this time. Furious, Kamuro wraps his appendages around Kei, attempting to crush him. Towa uses exploding bullets on Kamuro, which destroy the appendages and Kei drops to the ground. He finds the knife that Kamuro stabbed Aoki with and grabs it, charging at Kamuro and cutting deep into his head. Kamuro collapses and starts crumbling away. He asks Kei if he's going to die now, and Kei says that Kamuro is dying, but now he no longer has to suffer, giving him a smile. Kamuro laughs a little, and says that Kei really was a Cristo, and then he dissolves in Kei's arms.
Kei tells Towa again that he hated the name Cristo, because he hated being called a Messiah while he was killing so many living things, and he ran away because of that burden. But he wonders now if he is meant to become Cristo again, because there are still Adys around that need to be spared from their suffering. Towa tells him that's his choice to make, but he will follow Kei to the end, no matter what he chooses. When Aoki recovers, the truth behind the Adys' creation is revealed. However, the Sweepers are still needed, and Kei becomes one again. He stops wearing his eye patch and teams up with Towa to form the team called Cristo, and they help out new Sweepers everywhere.
personality
Kei, for the most part, is very calm and easygoing. He has a preference to just roll with things as they come and takes them in stride. He does most things with a casual smile. His quick reaction times often allow him to take the best course of action with the path of least resistance. He explains himself when necessary and is able to apologize when he is in the wrong. He is very cordial and will offer what he can as far as he deems reasonable, such as offering coffee and a willingness to train Towa in being an effective Sweeper. This makes Kei's boundaries rest on a very slide-able scale. His firm, "no" at Towa when it comes to accepting him as his disciple changes to one day of training, and then an indeterminate extended period. He also finds it easier to deflect questions he doesn't want to answer, such as issuing a question of his own when Towa asks why he stopped being a Sweeper.
Additionally, Kei is a very caring individual. He makes sure those in his care stay protected and will rush to the aid of anyone in danger. He doesn't hesitate to slice off Kamuro's arm to save Towa, for example. Kei also truly does not like taking the lives of any living thing, even when it comes to Adys. It is because he hated killing these creatures that he retired from being a Sweeper in the first place. Even as Kamuro dies in his arms, he is compassionate in saying that Kamuro no longer needs to suffer, and wishes to ease the suffering of other Adys.
Kei also prefers to be very supportive, and this lends him an almost naive-yet-motherly aura. He has stopped right in the midst of combat to praise Towa's improvements, giving smiles and applause, being genuinely proud of Towa for learning. He also doesn't seem to mind Aoki's advances at all, even though he admits that Aoki is a pervert. Though he doesn't return the feelings, he does allow Aoki to hug him and shower him with his flirtations.
However, Kei is not without his flaws. For one, he doesn't seem to take to well to abrupt surprises. When he sees Kamuro for the first time in years, Kei seems to be genuinely afraid for a moment, though he wipes it away to annoyance quickly. He also has a sharp defense response when he wakes up to Towa in his bed, instantly drawing his sword and holding it to Towa's throat before he recognizes the other man.
In addition, Kei does not take it well at all when Kamuro tells him that he is an Adys as well. He becomes desperate for answers, and hates the truth behind who he is. The little things, such as his rapid healing, remind him of his blood and rattle him deeply. It shakes him to his core to find out his origins and it causes him to explode at Aoki and Towa. Feeling stripped of his humanity and accomplishments, he questions everything he's known and shoves everyone away. He even accepts death when Kamuro asks him to become part of him. He doesn't know if he can ever accept being an Adys, and it haunts him deeply.
In the end, though, Kei regains his willpower - not by accepting that he is an Adys, but in wanting to fight for the ones he cares about the most. Being accepted as a friend by those he thought would view him as a monster gives him the courage to keep going forward. And in realising that the longer the defected Adys continue to live, the more they suffer, he picks back up the title of Sweeper, wishing to spare them of Kamuro's pain. He finds a purpose again and gracefully rises to the challenge with Towa by his side. Overall, Kei wishes to be strong and merciful.
